2008 New England Membrane Enzyme Group (NUTMEG) Conference
From October 5-7, 2008, the 2008 New England Membrane Enzyme Group (NUTMEG) Conference was hosted by Dr. John Stegeman (Project 6) and Dr. Mark Hahn (Project 5) at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. The conference has traditionally focused on cytochrome P450 enzymes, other membrane-bound enzymes, and their regulation. Beginning in 2007, this focus has broadened to encompass related interests of the New England Superfund groups at Boston University, Brown University, and Dartmouth College. Individuals from these groups and other institutions presented research of interest to Superfund faculty and trainees. Members of the groups had the opportunity to interact and discuss common themes and opportunities for collaborative research.
The following major presentations were made:
- Dr. Mary Schuler, University of Illinois: “CYP regulation by plant natural products: the insect paradigm”
- Dr. David Waxman, Boston University SRP: “Genomic approaches to sex differences in liver gene expression”.
- Dr. Carmen Marsit, Brown University SRP: “Epigenetics in toxicology and cancer biology”.
- Dr. Neel Aluru, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution: “Bisphenol A impacts embryogenesis and growth by disrupting the GH-IGF axis in rainbow trout.”
- Dr. Josh Hamilton, Marine Biological Laboratory and Dartmouth SRP: “Arsenic as an endocrine disruptor”
- Dr. Mark Hahn, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution and Boston University SRP: “Aryl Hydrocarbon Receptor Repressor (AHRR): Mechanisms and mysteries”
- Dr. Bruce Stanton, Dartmouth SRP: "Development of toxicogenomic approaches in Fundulus heteroclitus"
- Dr. Ann Tarrant, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution: “Nuclear receptors in an evolutionary context: Insights from the sea anemone Nematostella vectensis”
- Dr. Alan Anderson, Laval University: “Roles of the glucocorticoid receptor and the constitutive androstane receptor in the induction of murine CYP2B genes by dexamethasone”
A poster session included 24 posters, of which six were from post-doctoral fellows and 18 from pre-doctoral students; all three Superfund programs were well-represented. The Karen Wetterhahn Award for best poster in the post-doctoral division was given to Dr. Matt Jenny of the BU SRP for his work “Roles of Aryl hydrocarbon receptors (AhR) and AhR repressors in development and developmental neurotoxicity” (Jenny, M., Karchner, S. I., Franks, D. G., Woodin, B. & Hahn, M.). The Karen Wetterhahn Award for best poster in the predoctoral category was given to Courtney Kozul of the Dartmouth SRP for her presentation “Chronic low-dose arsenic in drinking water alters immune responses to respiratory viral infection in vivo” (Kozul, C. D., Ely, K. H., Enelow, R., Hamilton, J. W.).
It was agreed that the meeting was extremely useful from the standpoint of the interests of Superfund, particularly in the informality, which fostered good PI/student interactions and potential future collaborative exchanges between the three New England Superfund groups.
